So Far....

Since January, Children First has done much more than provide food
packs for students. The end of May saw 86 volunteers working as
study buddies, room parents, snack pack workers and in other
capacities.

The group has held two luncheons to show appreciation to the
teachers. This included providing volunteers to sit with the classes
so teachers could attend. Teachers also received goody bags in their
school mail boxes on Valentine’s Day.

Children First planned hands-on field trips for all classes. The
kindergarten went to Jones Farm for a hayride and picnic. The 1st
and 2nd grades visited the Huntsville Botanical Garden. Third
graders enjoyed a trip to SciQuest.  The 4th grade went to the
Huntsville Museum of Art to see the youth art exhibit. The graduating
5th graders spent their time at the Huntsville Space and Rocket
Center. All of these venues provided scholarships that allowed the
children these educational opportunities.

The school presented a Spring Extravaganza in May. Children First
provided backstage help and costumes and props, chaperoned
students backstage and handed out programs.

A community block party said farewell to West Huntsville Elementary
School. Children First supplied door prizes for the event.

At a Farewell Dinner at the school on May 7th, Principal Barbara
Johnson presented a Recognition Certificate to Children First “for
your loyalty, dedication and support to the students, faculty and staff
at West Huntsville Elementary School.” She also presented an
Appreciation Plaque “for your dedication and support of West
Huntsville Elementary School.”

Fall Plans

Children First is busy making plans for the new school year
beginning in August. The group will be serving children at Morris
Elementary where the West Huntsville students are moving. The
needs will be even greater at this larger school. Over 400 children will
need the weekend back pack help. That comes to more than 1400
back packs per school year. The need is great! FUMC hopes to make
it a community effort, including small churches who could not take
on a large project on their own.

A big Kick Off Event will take place in September at First United
Methodist Church to inform people about the program and enlist new
volunteers. Be on the lookout for more information about this event.
